6015 AN INSIDE-PAINTED ROCK CRYSTAL
SNUFF BOTTLE
Ding Hong
The compressed globular bottle supported
on an oval foot ring, with a cylindrical neck,
recessed lip, painted to one side with a scene
of two boys watching swallows in flight while
riding on water buffaloes half-submerged in a
river framed by reeds swaying in the breeze,
the verso depicting a herd boy sitting on a
rock next to a goat under the shade of a
large willow, signed Ding Hong, followed with
a small red seal mark.

Ding Hong was one of the alternative
names of Ding Guiling, a female student of
Ye Bengqi. She was active in Beijing in the
1960’s.

Ye Family Studio, 1924
The rounded square bottle with a raised
and recessed panel to each side, the
interior painted in soft-hued colors depicting
a continuous winter scene with a lone
fisherman sitting in his shanban floating on
a placid river and snow-covered mountains
stretching out in the distance, one side dated
jiazi zhongxia (midsummer of 1924), bearing
a signature Ye Zhongsan, followed with a red
seal mark.
