A BROWN OVERLAY WHITE GLASS
SNUFF BOTTLE
Yangzhou School, 1840-1900
Of compressed spherical form with a waisted
neck, flat lip, oval foot ring, delicately carved
through the thin dark brown overlays to
the milky white ground on each side with
an auspicious theme presented with a ruyi
scepter, fish, a pine branch, flowers, a pair of
ducks, and offerings of tea and fruits, each
side with either a four-character inscription or
a circular cartouche.

The four-character inscription reads
niannian ruyi (wishes being granted year
after year). The two-character cartouche
reads ping’an (peace).

SNUFF BOTTLE
1740-1820
The elongated tapering bottle with a
cylindrical neck, the inner side of the lip
slightly recessed toward its fairly wide mouth,
the opalescent ground decorated in orange-
red, blue, brown, yellow and some dark
highlight overlays, exquisitely carved with
circular reserves on the main sides filled with
either flowers or the bogu motif, the narrow
sides and the foot featuring three registers of
lithe chilong.
