A GREEN AND RUSSET JADE
SNUFF BOTTLE
1780-1880
Of compressed globular form, the neck
spreading gently towards a recessed lip, oval
foot ring, the green stone with an opaque
brown area to one of its main sides, carved in
relief with two undulating chilong, the reverse
decorated with a monkey offering a peach to
a Shoulao seated under a gnarled pine tree,
the lower section with a long russet stained
fissure line along an irregular U-shaped
band of paler color inclusions, giving an
appearance of mist rising from a valley, the
narrow sides surmounted with two faux lion
mask-and-ring handles.

A CARVED GREEN AND RUSSET JADE
SNUFF BOTTLE
1720-1820
Well-hollowed and with a narrow mouth, the
rounded rectangular bottle with a tapering
neck slightly contracting towards a flat lip,
oval foot ring, utilizing the dramatic earthy
brown inclusions in the evenly-hued green
stone, finely carved to each side with a
monkish figure seated on a cloud-encircled
rocky platform, one subduing an advancing
tiger, the other holding an alms bowl in his
right hand, his left hand pointing at a dragon
descending from a dense cloudbank, the
narrow sides with two raised, finely defined
lion mask-and-ring handles.

The two figures on this bottle represent two
of the Eighteen Arhats: Fuhu Luohan (taming
tiger Luohan), and Xianglong Luohan (taming
dragon Luohan).
