A GILT-BRONZE EGORO (HANDLED CENSER)
Edo period (1615-1868), 18th/19th century
Cast in bronze in two sections, the handle formed as a dragon, its claws
and teeth clasping the edge of the lotus-blossom ash bowl supported by
a stepped lotiform pedestal, the pierced cover finished with a lotus finial, 557
the counter balance at the dragon’s tail decorated with swirling clouds,
the underside of the pedestal and counterbalance with a shishi and coiling
dragon in high relief

The figure shown standing in long flowing robes, open at the chest, the
upswept hair set off with a crown and covered with a hood, cradling in
both hands a sutra scroll, the necklace and scroll-rollers inlaid with colored
stones, obscurely signed []mitsu saku

Cast in bronze, the handle formed as two twisted branches of prunus and
the body of the bell decorated with coiling grape vines in low relief, the lower
section with four flower-head striking panels above Chinese hexagram
symbols, the interior fitted with a modern iron clapper, set on a modern
stand
