A LARGE BRONZE AND ENAMEL ZUSHI (PORTABLE SHRINE)
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th century
The rectangular case with a domed roof and a loop handle of confronted
dragons, decorated on the sides and back with an etched design of a
rain dragon chasing a sacred jewel in swirling clouds, the hinged doors
decorated with floral medallions in colored enamels opening to reveal a
seated wood figure of Buddha dressed in monk’s robes decorated with
scrolling lotus in gold lacquer, the figure seated on a lotus riser, the interior of
the case gilt and finished with a canopy of rolling clouds

A LATER KEI SCHOOL ZUSHI WITH THREE DEITIES
By Koun, Edo period (1615-1868), dated 1746
The black-lacquer cabinet with hinged doors opening to reveal figures
of Fudo Myo-o flanked by Nyorai Kojin, and Aizen Myo-o, all carved
and assembled in wood and painted in pigments and gilt, with applied
jewelry and accouterments and set on a multi-tiered dais, inscribed on the
underside of the cabinet
