A GOLD-LACQUER ARMOR
Edo period (1615-1868), 18th century
The components lacquered gold and laced in scarlet comprising a 60-plate
suji kabuto lacquered black, with the suji lacquered gold, the four-stage
gilt tehen kanamono formed as a chrysanthemum surrounded by stylized
dragons in openwork, the five-lame shikoro ending in fukigaeshi applied with
dyed leather and highlighted with fusegumi, star-shaped bosses and manji
heraldic crests, the mabizashi with a continuation of the leather decoration
below a maedate of gold-lacquer kuwagata framing a gilt-copper ken; the
russet-lacquer menpo with deep wrinkles on the cheeks and applied with
a stiff boar-bristle mustache, the mask fitted with a three-lame yodarekake;
the go-mai okegawa do with horizontal rows of scales and decorated
on the muna-ita and waki-ita with manji crests and scrolling vines in gold
lacquer on a dark brown-lacquer ground, the do fitted with seven sections
of five-lame kusazuri; chu-sode and oda-gote with chain-mail uppers;
Etchu-haidate and shino-suneate; with a large wood storage box with a
matching manji crest, and an armor stand
