Tairona nose ornaments usually extended to the
sides of the nose. They were cast in gold or in
tumbaga and were frequently decorated with false
filigree ornament or stylized serpents. These
adornments emphasized the central part of the
face and would have transformed the mouth
into a brilliant snoutlike shape. It may be that the
nose ornament identified the wearer with the
jaguar-man. A.M.F.
