Practice Questions - Section 4

            Instructions:
The following questions are designed to give you the opportunity to practice for the EGSA Electrical
Generator Service Technician Certification exam and to determine areas where you may need study
            and review.
Once you have taken the practice questions, you can check your answers using a separate document
from the ESGA Study Guide. This document contains explanations for most of the correct and in-
correct answers. Task links are also provided with each question. These links direct you to specific
category and task areas. From there, you can locate the text to use for reference on your specific area
            of need.

Section 4 - Engine Generator Instrumentation and Controls

            78. A magnetic pick-up

                   a. Can detect zero speed
                   b. Is an electronically controlled semiconductor device
                   c. Works with ferrous metal gear teeth
                   d. Actually has nothing to do with magnetism at all

            79. Engine controllers require what instruments to monitor engine conditions?

                   a. System controller
                   b. Motion sensors
                   c. Engine protective devices
                   d. Remote annunciator

            80. What is a PLC?

                   a. An inexpensive controller that can replace many other expensive controllers
                   b. A controller used exclusively for I/O functions and is completely programmable
                   c. A preprogrammed device whose configuration can never be changed once shipped
                   d. A device that has only very limited fixed I/O. PLCs can never have adaptive I/O

            81. Engine sending units are often Analog (varying voltage level) devices. How can they interface with
                   Digital (on/off) controllers?

                   a. Analog to Digital (A/D) internal conversion logic
                   b. That is determined by the engine manufacturer
                   c. Inductive to switched reluctance conversion
                   d. By increasing the number of digital switches

            82. How does an RTD measure temperature?

                   a. By changing its semiconductor properties with heat
                   b. By changing resistance with heat
                   c. By changing its internal pressure with heat
                   d. An RTD is a radio telemetry device and sends data to the controller
