New Genus and Species of Marine Worm
Discovered by Lecturer Nancy Prentiss


Nancy Prentss, UMF lecturer in biology, announced her discovery of a new
genus and species of marine worm found in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Years of
painstaking research determined the fnd is a new species of polychaete.
Prentss named the newly discovered fanworm (Turbocavus secretus) for the
locaton (Turbocavus = Hurricane Hole) where she found it while snorkeling in
St. John’s pristne Hurricane Hole.
According to the Portland Press Herald, the discovery is not
just a new species, but a whole new genus or biological
classifcaton of plants or animals. Specimens of the new
fanworm species are now permanently deposited in
the Smithsonian Natonal Museum of Natural History in
Washington, D.C.










New Alpine Operations
Certifcate Program

Announced for Fall 2015

In January at Titcomb Mountain, President
Kathryn Foster was joined by industry leaders
from Sugarloaf, Sunday River and Saddleback
ski resorts at the announcement of the
University’s new Alpine Operatons Certfcate
Program, beginning in fall 2015.

As reported by the Portland Press Herald,
the program is designed to teach students
business and marketng skills specifc to
the industry. Led by Scot Hoisington ’79,
as the University’s new Alpine Operatons
coordinator and ski coach, the certfcate
program combines business and ski classes
with on-mountain instructon experience and
an industry internship.
