Hillsboro: The area around Hillsboro has been a favorite collecting locale over the years. O. B. Metcalfe (1901-1905), Loraine Yeatts (1987), Kenneth D. Heil (1998-2012), Ruth A. Nelson (1932), Kenneth W. Parker (1935), and Robert Sivinski (1993-2018) are among those who collected plants specimens in and near the town.
East of Hillsboro: This area is steeped in mining history. The old mining roads and trails in this area are covered in Volume 1, of the second edition of Walks In the Black Range. Among those who collected plant specimens in the area are Almut G. Jones (1983), E. F. Castetter (1939-1954), and Loraine Yeatts (1987)
Kingston: The pinyon, oak, and pine habitat around Kingston makes for rich collecting grounds. O. B. Metcalfe (1901-1905), Richard D. Worthington (1983-1998), D. Potter (1963), Robert Sivinski (1993-2018), Charlotte O. Gooding (1938-1939), William R. Chapline, Jr. (1914-1916), and Steve L. O’Kane, Jr. (2010) are a few of the people who have collected plant specimens in the area.
Forest Road 157 (North Percha Road): Kenneth D. Heil (1998-2012), Diego Villalba (1995), Richard D. Worthington (1983-1998), and C. R. (Bob) Hutchins (1980-1990) are some of the people who collected plant specimens in the area adjoining this road. Many canyons are crossed by this road, including Carbonate, Mineral, and North Percha.
The North East
The northeast quadrant of the Black Range is generally accessed from the roads out of Winston and Chloride. The map linked to above (at the start of this write-up) provides detail for those areas. In general, this area is not well represented in the specimen list of this checklist.
The Land Less Visited
The listing of locales, above, is very general in nature. The Black Range is a place where you can stop beside a road and walk, no trail is necessary. It may be rough, even dangerous, but access is readily had. There is no reason to believe that areas which have been less frequently visited by collectors are any less diverse in their flora.
