Kherson's Khersonoblenergo lost partial control over electric networks.
The JSC Khersonoblenergo electricity distribution system operator lost partial control over electrical networks due to the capture of separate objects by the occupiers. Khersonoblenergo’s control faltered over the region's power grids after the Russian occupation forces seized certain facilities with the support of collaborators. As explained by the company, on June 27 this year, representatives of the "Kherson Military-Civil Administration" with the support of the FSB and the participation of the head of the air and cable electricity networks of the company, seized facilities that supply and distribute electricity to consumers in the Kherson area.
Ukrainian nuclear power plants can reduce EU dependence on Russian coal and gas. The United States and Ukraine are working to securely integrate the Ukrainian and European power grids. As a result, there will be a significant reduction in the EU's dependence on Russian coal and gas, stated the US Assistant Secretary of Energy for International Affairs, Andrew Light. "Any discussion on European energy security today must include Ukraine. Ukraine's nuclear power plants alone can reduce Europe's dependence on Russian coal and gas as soon as Ukraine can export electricity to Europe," he said. He stressed that the US promotes this goal and will work with Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy, which will use emergency funds to support Ukraine's full integration into the European grid.
Ukraine offers to export electricity from its nuclear power plants to Germany. The Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Herman Galushchenko, confirmed that Ukraine's nuclear plants are ready to export electricity to Germany. He noted that Germany's decision to eliminate its dependence on Russian energy is a massive challenge, and the issue is becoming increasingly important in light of restrictions on gas supplies from Russia. But, according to the Minister, Ukraine can support Germany in this difficult matter. Despite the development of renewable energy, which is expected to reach 25% of total energy in Ukraine by 2030, nuclear energy is a central component of carbon-free production. It accounts for more than 50% of electricity produced, and Ukraine has sufficient export capacity. Furthermore, according to Halushchenko, the fact that Ukraine has synchronized its energy network with its European counterpart since March 16 means that it can become an electricity supplier to Germany.
Ukraine expects the first quotas for electricity exports to Europe.
Ukraine expects to receive the first quotas for 100 MW of electricity exports to Europe from the ENTSO-E continental network next week. Ukraine will receive the volumes and distribution scheme between neighboring system operators: Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. “We are counting on the previously announced 100 MW, and distribution between the countries is still under discussion," said an adviser to Prime Minister Yuriy Boyko. According to him, NEC Ukrenergo has fulfilled all six technical prerequisites necessary to export Ukrainian electricity to Europe. He also clarified that some issues are still being worked out at the technical and organizational levels at the request of ENTSO-E.
Ukraine has great potential to create a hydrogen economy. Clean hydrogen is a new and universal energy source with rapidly growing demand projected for decades to come, and Ukraine can, and should,
