8.0 Demographic shift
A new crisis is silently emerging on the horizon in Iran – the imminent ageing crisis. Predictions suggest that the elderly population is set to constitute more than a third of Iran’s population within the next 30 years.
The severity of the ageing crisis lies in the fact that many elderly individuals are expected to grapple with various challenges, reaching a state of complete dependence. The changing demographic landscape poses a significant threat, with the elderly either leaving the labour market or playing diminished roles in it.
Healthcare infrastructure is bracing for a surge in age-related illnesses. According to official narratives in the healthcare sector, approximately 40% of hospital beds in Iran are currently occupied by the elderly. With the anticipated increase in the elderly population, this percentage is anticipated to rise significantly, posing a strain on the system.
The nature of ageing has evolved over the years, with traditional support systems undergoing a transformation. In the past, elderly individuals received support from their families and acquaintances, and economic situations varied from today. Larger households mitigated loneliness, and economic support was more readily available. Contemporary dynamics present a stark contrast, however.
According to official statistics, Iran is now home to around 12mn singles, with more than 6mn males between the ages of 20 and 45. If these individuals opt never to marry, the landscape of ageing in Iran is poised to take on a different shape, presenting even more challenges for the government.
The societal shift towards more singles and smaller households highlights the need for a comprehensive and proactive approach to address the impending ageing crisis. Initiatives to provide social and economic support for the elderly, enhance healthcare services and encourage familial and community involvement are imperative.
As Iran navigates a multifaceted landscape of crises, the ageing crisis demands immediate attention and strategic planning, the report said.
Failure to act swiftly could result in a future where a significant portion of the population faces profound challenges, necessitating a concerted effort from the government, healthcare sector and society at large to ensure a sustainable and supportive environment for the elderly.
