     professional activities.
These arrests drew condemnation from international organisations such as the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Press Institute (IPI), who called for the immediate release of the journalists and an end to the assault on the independent press. Human Rights Watch and Freedom Now released a joint report documenting the government's efforts to silence critics and decimate civil society.
The crackdown on independent media has had a chilling effect on freedom of expression in Azerbaijan. Journalists and media outlets are increasingly hesitant to report on sensitive issues or criticise the government, fearing reprisals.
The Azerbaijani government defended its actions, denying any connection between the arrests and the journalists' professional activities. It maintained that the detainees were involved in criminal activities and that the legal proceedings were conducted in accordance with the law. The government's response to international criticism has been largely dismissive, indicating a lack of willingness to address the concerns raised by human rights organisations.
However, international pressure continued to mount. The US ambassador to Azerbaijan called for the release of those imprisoned for fighting for human rights. The European Union urged Azerbaijani authorities to address the human rights crisis and ensure the release of political prisoners. Despite these calls, the Azerbaijani government has shown little indication of changing its course.
 2.0 Macroeconomic Outlook 2.1 Macroeconomy – Georgia
Georgia's economy grew strongly in early 2024, driven by private consumption, rising wages and consumer loans, alongside shifting spending by Russian migrants. However, uncertainty looms due to volatile politics, the decision to postpone EU accession efforts and ongoing protests, dampening investor confidence. Slowing wage growth, reduced lending, and inflation may challenge consumption-led growth.
