Romania’s manufacturing index PMI returned to negative territory in July 2024, after three months above the 50-point neutral benchmark. The PMI rally in March-May coincided with outstanding industrial performance in March and April. But the unexpected improvement was short-lived and both the PMI and industrial output index returned to negative territory.
At 48.0 in November, Romania’s PMI was little changed on the month from 48.1 in October remaining negative, signalling slow but steady deterioration in the health of the Romanian manufacturing sector.
On a more optimistic note, the structure of Romania’s industry shows signs of improvement.
While industrial output contracted by 2.2% y/y in volume terms during the first three quarters of 2024, the decline in value-added terms was limited to just 0.4%.
