9.1.3 Transport sector news
Up to 10 million tons of cargo will be transported to the EU via the restored railway from Ukraine to Moldova. This was announced by the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine, Oleksandr Kubrakov, on August 22 at the official opening of the renovated Berezyne — Basarabyaska railway section. After Russia's blockade of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, the question arose of finding alternative ways of supplying agricultural products through the ports of Romania and Bulgaria. The need to restore the railway connection through the section, which has been closed since 1997, has become especially acute following Russian attacks on the bridge across the Dniester estuary. Now the main railway route connecting Odesa and the Danube ports of Reni and Izmail has already been linked to the railway connection.
Ukrainian Railways has restored the abandoned track to the Romanian border. Ukrainian Railways (UZ) restored about 20 km of railway track from the Carpathians to the border with Romania and has also opened two checkpoints on the Romanian border. The checkpoints are Rakhiv - Berlebash - state border and Teresva - state border. In total, there are 19.3 km and 1.1 km of new track. According to Oleksandr Kamyshin, the route's opening will allow passage of an additional six pairs of freight trains daily, which will be an additional 3.5 million tons of cargo annually. Moreover, these two sections open up prospects for new passenger routes - between Uzhhorod and Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi, as well as between Ukrainian and Romanian cities. But for this, Romania needs to repair tracks in its territory.
Rail link connecting Ukraine to Moldova now operational. Ukraine has restored a rail link to neighbouring Moldova after a nearly 25-year hiatus and the connection could carry 10 million tonnes of freight a year, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky's video address on Aug. 22.

The length of the route is approximately 2,400 km. The planned transportation is between Ukraine and Spain with the transshipment of goods in Helm, 25 km from the border with Ukraine. Renfe Mercancías' containers departed August 9 and will arrive in Chelm on August 22-28 to load Ukrainian corn. After loading the containers, the train will run on the standard track from Łódź to Barcelona. The arrival of the pilot batch in Barcelona is anticipated in the beginning of September.
