Homosexuality - A human perspective !
Dipannita Das (Flat - 08/1B)
Homosexuality is not a virus and marriage is not a tetanus shot that it can cure the mental and
physical desire of an individual. In many countries, same sex marriage is legal, but then, it is
India, and our society is blessed with stupid superstitions and they find homosexuality is a
mental illness and performs religious rituals to get out of it. Are you serious? Which age, we
belong to? The choice of a partner has nothing to do with mental illness. They are as normal as
we “straight” people are Section 377 IPC is damaging our thought process and it has become a
weapon to harass people who choose a partner of the same sex or want to marry a same sex
partner.
In the name of social custom and tradition of India, people from the LGBT community and
straight people are suffering at the same time. A 31-year old AIIMS doctor committed suicide
because her husband is a gay and her 5 years of marriage is just a 'show off'to our society. We
Indians are very smart and we have explanations like “Lok kya kehenge”, “shaadi kebaad sab
tik o jayega” NO! It will not be right if we think homosexuality as a social taboo. Don't we have
the right to choose our partner?
It is really pathetic to see straight people living in despair because their gay or lesbian partner
cannot connect with them physically or do not show any love and affection to them. This leads
to depression and trauma and finally ends up with suicide. I ask, as parents do you want to
lose your child's life in such a manner? I challenge you that you do not want such thing to
happen, then why cannot you accept the happiness of your Gay / Lesbian child. After all, it is
their life and their happiness and they have full right to lead it in their way.
The older generation loves to pretend in front of the relatives, friends and neighbors and this is
the reason that we are stereotyped in the matter of love, marriage and sex. But, our society
does not accept the LGBT community with open hands and we find most of them stay aloof
from the society and family, make fake email accounts to join various gay or lesbian
communities or indulge in negative deeds. These activities are far more dangerous for our
society.
They are not illegal, and even deserve equal mental peace to lead a happy life in the future
with a same sex partner. Finally, on 6 September 2018, consensual gay sex was finally
legalised by India's Supreme Court. It's a ray of hope for LGBT community to come out from
their shells and embrace love. Recently, Bollywood took a bold step to break the stereotype and
Sonam Kapoor's movie “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga” is based on same sex love story. Be a
support of LGBT community and spread love and not anger.
