RULES. If you talk to a rules person about communion, they will
usually talk about how we must be careful taking the body and
blood of Jesus. You know, you can eat and drink damnation to
yourself if you’re not right in your spirit, so be sure you repent
before taking communion. Make sure you don’t have any anger,
unforgiveness, or resentment against anyone. What they have to
say is all about them, and what they have to do. Or they talk
about communion being with grape juice, or with real wine. It is
all focused on the mechanics. Is it sin to have wine? It has little to
with the Spirit, or salvation by the finished work of Jesus.
RELATIONSHIP. If you talk to a gospel person about communion,
everything they have to say is about Jesus. It is his body and
blood, his forgiveness, his righteousness, and his grace. They think
about being part of the body, flesh and bones of Jesus, as Paul
says in Ephesians. They take communion to remember all Jesus
has done for us, and is doing in us. It not about remembering
what we did last week or last night. What we did last week or
last night is important, but if we are in Jesus, it has nothing to do
with our salvation or our eternal destiny.
