P. 17

This course will introduce students to the foundational concepts of computer programming in today’s society. The course will use critical thinking skills to challenge students to explore computing and technology solutions that impact the world. Techniques involve developing logic and creative problem-solving skills as well as the ability to create programs through coding for real-life applications.
APPLIED PROGRAMMING: GAMING/VR (129) (Formerly Applied Programming Concepts)
Semester 1/2 Credit Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 Req: Fundamentals of Programming (128) or Departmental Approval
Students will be introduced to the concepts of programming using modern game engines. Leveraging knowledge gained in Fundamentals of Programming (128), students will learn how to program in the game engine environment and complete augmented reality/virtual reality projects. Concepts such as API usage, debugging, project management, and game design will be covered.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT/HONORS COMPUTER SCIENCE A (123)
Year 1 Credit
Grade 10, 11, 12
Req: Fundamentals of Programming (128) (or Department Approval) and Completed AP Application
AP Computer Science A is equivalent to a first-semester, college-level course in Computer Science. The course introduces students to computer science with fundamental topics that include problem-solving, design strategies and methodologies, organization of data (data structures), approaches to processing data (algorithms), analysis of potential solutions, and the ethical and social implications of computing. The course emphasizes both object-oriented and imperative problem solving and design. These techniques represent proven approaches for developing solutions that can scale up from small, simple problems to large, complex problems. The AP Computer Science A course curriculum is compatible with many CS1 courses in colleges and universities. This course is a preparation for the Advanced Placement CSA examination. It is the expectation that students will take the AP exam at the end of the school year.
