ENGLISH PROGRAM
All students follow the sequential English program and complete four (4) required units of English. A full unit of English
must be fulfilled each year. The English Language Arts program encompasses the study of reading, writing, and oral
communication, while promoting critical and creative thinking. It includes the expansion of vocabulary, development of
grammar skills, mastery of composition in accordance with the Modern Language Association (MLA) standards,
understanding of research principles, and practice of public speaking. The range of literary genres includes the short story,
novel, drama, poetry, and nonfiction of American, British, and multicultural literature.
Padua Franciscan High School offers a comprehensive English program for students with
and appropriate IEP/ISP. This program is designed to meet the needs of students who have been identified with a specific learning disability in 1) reading comprehension, 2) basic reading skills, 3) oral expression, 4) written expression, and/or 5) listening comprehension. Students completing this program will fulfill the minimum required college-preparatory English core curriculum upon graduation. Details are on page 57.

Req: Students enrolled in Regular English 9 (212A) must also enroll in this full year course. Students enrolled in English 9 (216S) will be placed as per their IEP goals.
This course will help students develop sequential reading, literacy, and study skills. Students will practice the skills individually and in group work assignments. Individual work will be based upon strengths and weaknesses determined through diagnostic tests of content-specific skills through the MindPlay program. Also emphasized is the development of confidence and positive thinking habits which are needed to be successful in and out of the classroom. Course assignments, activities, and assessments will be differentiated according to student needs. This is a P/F class, which means there will be no impact to their GPA.
