REGULAR ENGLISH 9 (212D)

Req: Placement is based on English grades received in junior high school and Placement Test scores. Students in this course must also schedule Reading (205)
This course ensures that students will have a solid foundation in English language skills. These skills include the basic elements of grammar, vocabulary, literary analysis, academic writing, and interpersonal communication. Various literary forms are introduced through the reading of novels as well as short stories, drama, non-fiction, poetry, and mythology. Students will create the initial pieces of their 4-year career writing and professional communication portfolio. Course assignments, activities, and assessments are differentiated according to student needs.

This course proceeds at an accelerated pace with an emphasis on independence, allowing students to develop and refine their skills in grammar, vocabulary, literary analysis, academic writing, and interpersonal communication. These skills are further developed in conjunction with the study of literature and literary genres, including the short story, novel, drama, poetry, nonfiction, and mythology. Students will create the initial pieces of their 4-year career writing and professional communication portfolio.

Req: Recommendation of 9th grade English teacher and Department approval
This course further develops student knowledge of literary devices and literary genres, such as short story, drama, poetry, novel, and nonfiction. A focus on close reading, evidence-based writing, and vocabulary are integral parts of this course. The communication disciplines of this course include critical listening, professional writing, and interpersonal and intrapersonal communication. Students will create additional pieces for their 4-year career writing and professional communication portfolio. Course assignments, activities, and assessments are differentiated according to student needs.
