Population

Aim: This course is aimed at nurses who work with

diabetics in the elderly care setting to provide them with

best practice guidelines in diabetes care in elderly

populations.

Course Content: Types of diabetes, epidemiology,

treatments, choice of therapies, basic nutrients. Guidelines

for practice regarding care of residents with diabetes in care

homes. American Diabetes Association nutrition

recommendations. Guidelines for the undernourished

diabetic. Overview of protocol for monitoring blood glucose,

aspects of hypoglycaemia. Therapeutic approaches to

glycaemic control in diabetics in elderly care populations.
