Over 11,000 runners register annually for a chance to run the scenic St. George Marathon! The Marathon began in 1977 with only 42 participants and has grown to include 7,800 runners from 49 states and 12 foreign countries and is the largest single-day event in Southern Utah. The community embraces the Marathon with over 1,700 volunteers helping with the race every year.
In the January 2010 issue of Runner’s World, the St. George Marathon was listed in the annual reader’s survey as America’s most organized marathon. The readers also ranked St. George #7 best overall. It has also been dubbed:
• The “Fastest Fall Marathon”
• One of the Most Scenic Marathons
• One of the “Cream of the Crop” Marathons
• One of four “Marathons to Build a Vacation Around”
Due to the marathon’s popularity, participation is by lottery registration.
Race participants return again and again to enjoy the small town feel, friendly volunteers, and well-organized event.
