Adverbs that Modify Adjectives

Adverbs also modify adjectives. When modifying an adjective, the adverb comes immediately before the
adjective and usually answers how or to what extent.

The apple was truly delicious. (Delicious is an adjective describing the noun apple. Truly is an adverb describing
the adjective delicious, telling how delicious.)

                Practice 5G: Underline the adverbs.

                1. M y mo t h e r is p r ac t i c al ly p e r fe c t i n e v e ry w ay .
                2. M ar k w as v e ry i ll .
            3. D o u g las n o t i c ed t h e ex tr em el y d a r k c a r c o m i ng a r o u n d t he c u r v e .
            4. S h e d i d n o t n o ti c e th e m a n ' s s e v er el y s c a r r ed f a c e .
            5. I as k e d h im an e x t re m e ly d i f fi c u l t q u e s t io n .

            Adverbs that Modify Other Adverbs
Adverbs occasionally modify other adverbs. When an adverb modifies another adverb, it is located
immediately before the adverb and usually tells how.
            Examples:
            1. He walked too fast for me. (fast to what extent?)
            2. The kitten purred very softly. (how softly?)
            3. Do not run so quickly. (how quickly?)

Practice 5H: Adverbs Modifying Adverbs. Underline the modifying adverbs that modify an other adverb.
