            Conjunctions

The word conjunction means what it sounds like. A junction is a place where two or more things meet or join.
Conjunctions function to join parts of a sentence; they join words, phrases, or clauses.

There are two main types of conjunctions: 1) coordinating and 2) subordinating. There are also conjunctive
adverbs, which are adverbs that function as conjunctions.
            Coordinating Conjunctions

A coordinating conjunction is a conjunction that joins similar or equal words, phrases, or clauses. These are
the most common: and, but, or, nor, so, for*, yet.
            Examples:
            1. John and Tammy went to the store. (joining two words)
            2. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
            3. Let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years.
            4. John went to the store and to the lake. (joining two prepositional phrases)
            5. John went to the store, or he went to the lake. (joining two independent clauses)

*For is used as a conjunction when it means because or since. For can also be used as a preposition. If used as a
preposition, it must have an object.
            Examples:
            1. Fear the Lord, for those who fear Him need nothing. (conjunction; means because)
            2. Jesus died for the sins of the world. (preposition; object is sins)

Practice 7C: Conjunction or Preposition. If for is used as a conjunction (joining similar words, phrases, or
clauses), mark it as C. If for is used as a preposition, underline the prepositional phrase.
                1. She returned to him; for the water was on the surface of all the earth.
            2. Sin’s desire is for you, but you must master it.
            3. The serpent said, “You will not die! For God knows your eyes will be opened.”
            4. The fruit of the tree was good for food and was pleasing to the eye.
            5. It was also desirable for wisdom.
Practice 7D: Coordinating Conjunctions. Underline the conjunction.

               1. This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from you will be your heir.
               2. Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.
            3. I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a
nation greater and stronger than they.
            4. Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you.
            5. You must not touch it, or you will die.
