Commas
Joining Independent Clauses
Use a comma and a coordinating conjunction to join two independent clauses. (, conjunction)
1. A good man will be honest, and he will be successful.
2. A good man will be honest and will be successful.
Comma Errors
Serious punctuation error results when separate independent clauses are joined by only a comma (comma
splice) or without any punctuation (run-on sentence).
A godly man will love the Lord and he A godly man will love the Lord, and he will
will love his wife as Christ loves the love his wife as Christ loves the church.

church.

*Note: A semi-colon works well if the two
independent clauses are closely related.

1. King Herod heard this and he was disturbed and troubled.

3. The people saw Jesus and His disciples and many recognized them.
4. Jesus went ashore but He saw a large crowd and left.
