Computer Basics
By Dr. Kris Bjorgen
Study Section 1: The Basics of a Computer
1.1 Connect
This is a class for very beginning computer users. You are not expected to have ANY experience with
computers. If you’ve never touched a computer before, this is the right place for you. If you know a bit
about computers, it will not hurt you to review.
We will be using personal computers (PC) running the Microsoft Windows operating system. You may
have heard these words before, but if not, don’t worry. We’ll cover their meanings later in the course. It is highly
recommended that you have access to a personal computer, either a laptop or a desktop computer to use in the
process of taking this course.
Don’t get discouraged! Remember: Practice makes perfect and everyone starts out as a beginner. Using the
keyboard and mouse may be challenging at first, but it will become easier the more you use them. It just takes a
little effort and, like anything else you practice, your brain will quickly get the hang of it. Let’s get started.
1.2 Objectives
1. The student should be able to explain the various components of the computer and what each one
does.
2. The student should be able to tell you what software is and how it enhances the use of a computer.
3. The student should be able to describe various operating systems and how they drive the computer.
1.3 What is a Computer?
A computer consists mainly of a Central Processing Unit (commonly known as a CPU), a monitor, a
keyboard, and a mouse. Other hardware can include a printer, a scanner, flash drives and other
devices. Below is some basic information about those devices and their uses. Identifying major
computer components:
1. CPU: The main part of the computer is the Central Processing Unit (CPU), which is
the “brains” of the computer. On the outside, you will see the cd/dvd drives, one or
more USB drives, the power button, and the reset button. New models of a
computer may not even have a CD or DVD drive, as most programs can be installed
directly from the internet by downloading them to your computer. The days of a 5 ¼
floppy disc drive are long past!
