All Dinosaur names are hard to say
If you get your tongue tied in knots trying to say PACHYCEPHALOSAURUS (pak-ee-SEF-uh-lo-SAWR-us), JIANIANHUALONG (j-YAN-yan-HWA-long) or NAASHOIBITOSAURUS (NA-a-SHOW-ee-BEET-o-SAWR-us), don’t worry! Not all dinosaur names are quite so tricky.
A N Z U was a large, toothless dinosaur from what is now North America. It was named after a half-lion, half-bird monster from an ancient Asian religion.
M I N M I was an armoured herbivore that lived in what is now Australia. It was named after the Minmi crossing, near where it was discovered.
J O B A R I A was a sauropod from Africa and was named after a mythical creature, Jobar, that people from Nigeria once believed in.
W U L O N G was a small dinosaur related to MICRORAPTOR. 'Wu' means ‘to dance’ in Chinese, which describes the elegant, dance-like pose the fossilised skeleton was preserved in.
S H A N A G was a small, speedy hunter and was named after a type of dance from
a Buddhist festival.
K H A A N was discovered in Mongolia
where ‘khaan’ is a word that means ‘ruler’ or ‘king’ (which makes it sound very impressive even though K H A A N wasn’t actually very imposing!)
Y I has one of the shortest names scientists have ever given to an animal. Its full, scientific name is Y I Q I .
T H A N O S was a huge carnivore named after a comic-book villain – poor T H A N O S !
Z U U L is another dinosaur named after a bad guy. It was an armoured dinosaur with a big tail club and was fossilised with skin! It was named after a character in the film Ghostbusters from the 1980s!
