Page 22 - Everything You Know About Dinosaurs is Wrong
P. 22

Dinosaurs were
either ‘lizard−hipped’
or ‘bird−hipped’
Everyone who knows even a little bit about dinosaurs knows there are two main groups . . . and it’s all in the hips.
Most dinosaur books tell you this: dinosaurs including sauropods like K A AT E D O C U S
and theropods like B E I S H A N L O N G were saurischians, who had ‘lizard-like’ hip bones, whereas ornithopods like OLOROTITAN and ceratopsians like AURORACERATOPS
were ornithischians, and had ‘bird-like’ hip bones.

 REALLY BELONGS OVER HERE?
   18
Well, to start, avian dinosaurs (or modern-day birds) evolved from animals that were saurischians . . . so ‘bird-like hips' really should have been the name given to the ‘lizard-hipped’ saurischians!
But here’s where it gets really interesting: some palaeontologists in 2017 scrapped 130 years of scientific knowledge and began to think that, maybe, this way of splitting the dinosaurs isn’t quite right after all.
By painstakingly looking extremely closely at many dinosaur fossils, they began to think that the theropods might actually have been more closely related to the ornithischians than to the sauropods, and that theropods and ornithischians should be grouped together in a group of dinosaurs called the ‘ornithoscelida’ (which is a mouthful). Yeesh!
Not all palaeontologists agree with this idea though and only time will tell whether this new family tree is the correct one. In scientific language, this is a ‘new hypothesis’ to be tested and might be disproved by other scientists in the future . . .
