Dinosaurs could roar
Did dinosaurs really make a deafening din? Looking at animals that roar today can give us clues to help us find out.
On the African savanna, a L I O N ’s roar can be heard 8 kilometres away! The secret of the lion’s roar is the special skin and vocal cords deep within its throat – and the roar can mean ‘hello’, ‘where are you?’ or ‘stay back!’.
Vegetarian animals can roar too, like male RED DEER that roar to show off about how big they are to other males – before clashing antlers!
e
RED HOWLER MONKEYS use a special bone in their throat to make their deep, loud roar, which can be heard almost
4 kilometres away, echoing above Central and South American jungles.
It’s not only land animals that can roar. HARBOUR SEALS are shy when they’re on land, but under water they roar when they want to warn off intruders. Different groups of seals roar in their own way, like people speaking with different accents.
