Dinosaurs were mean
We’ve all seen pictures of scary-looking T Y R A N N O S A U R U S in books or models of grumpy-looking STEGOSAURUS in museums and it’s hard to imagine them having a softer side. But there are a lot of fossil clues that tell us many dinosaurs had a caring side when it came to their babies.
Today, many species of living dinosaurs and their relatives, crocodiles and alligators, look after their young by fetching food for them and protecting them in cosy nests.
When they first hatch out of their eggs, baby birds, crocodiles and alligators aren’t ready to fend for themselves so they need their parents to care for them.
It’s likely many species of extinct dinosaurs, like M E I , looked and acted similarly when they hatched out of their eggs and needed their parents to help them survive.
By studying dinosaur footprints, palaeontologists know that herds of dinosaurs would travel with younger members of their species, and probably would have protected them from predators trying to pick off a tasty snack – just as large animals like elephants do today.
