Some other sauropods had crazy
neck spikes – BAJADASAURUS was only about the height of an elephant but its neck spines would have made it look much bigger!
Long−necked dinosaurs all looked the same
We ALL know what the sauropod dinosaurs looked like, right? They’re the ones with long necks, long tails and big feet – just like DIPLODOCUS.
The earliest sauropods we have found – like ISANOSAURUS from the Triassic period and KOTASAURUS from the Jurassic period – already walked on four wide feet and had the long necks and swishing tails that make this
group so easy to spot. But there were a lot of different kinds of sauropods – and some were really weird.
Being a chunky herbivore can be
a scary business – all that standing around munching on vegetation can make you a prime target for predators. But some sauropods like SHUNOSAURUS had something they could use to defend themselves – a spike-covered club on the end of their tail. Take that, theropods!
BRACHYTRACHELOPAN had
a very short neck and couldn’t stretch it very far up or down.
SALTASAURUS went a little further – a lot of its body was covered in armour plates to protect it from attacks.
