Page 31 - Everything You Know About Dinosaurs is Wrong
P. 31

Those noisy animals were all mammals – but what about reptiles and birds that are alive today?
CROCODILES, ALLIGATORS and CAIMAN might look scary, but they can’t really roar. The biggest noise they can make is a loud, deep rumble that makes water dance and splutter off their armoured backs.
Theworld’sbiggestlizardistheKOMODO DRAGON from Indonesia. Although they hunt animals as big as water buffalo and pigs, they only make a menacing- sounding hiss from their toothy mouths.
Dinosaur voice boxes don’t fossilise . . . If they did, we’d know for sure what sounds they made.
But because these reptiles and birds are all related to dinosaurs, it means dinosaurs probably sounded similar.
So, it is likely that TYRANNOSAURUS and ALLOSAURUS didn’t actually roar . . . But some of the duck-billed hadrosaur dinosaurs, like PARASAUROLOPHUS, might have blown air around their strange head crests, which might have made them sound like . . . a trumpet! Toot-toot!
The dinosaurs alive today are known for their chirps, tweets and dawn choruses. The WHITE BELLBIRD from South America is the world’s noisiest bird and makes a ‘bonk’ louder than amotorbike. But it’s not a roar!
