Chesterfield: a great place to make things
World-leading local manufacturing
The area’s proud tradition continues with hi-tech firms among global pioneers
Chesterfield has long had a proud tradition in manufac- turing and engineering.
Equipment designed and made here cut the Channel Tunnel and the Moscow un- derground, whilst in World War Two, the town’s Markham and Co built top secret X Class mini submarines.
And that tradition contin- ues to this day with a number of global-leading firms based in the town.
There’s a good chance that the next time shoppers across the country put fruit juice and snacks into their supermar- ket trolleys they will have been produced with the help of a specialist Chesterfield firm.
MSE Hiller supplies and rents centrifuges and engi- neering equipment to the food industry right across the UK.
Meanwhile another local business, Weightron Bilan-
ciai, is the UK’s leading maker of weighbridges, industrial weighing machinery and soft- ware.
The name Robinson’s has long-standing associations with the town, dating back some 175 years.
At one time, the Brampton- based business was the single biggest employer in Chester- field, with a staggering 4,500 employees.
Today, the company makes specialist packaging for prod- ucts that are used by such household multi-national names as Proctor & Gamble, Nestle, Unilever, Avon, Boots and Dr Oetker.
Global Brands is another home-grown Chesterfield success story.
Formed in 1997, the busi- ness is perhaps best known for its VK Vodka Kick drinks, but the company and produc- es, markets and distributes a

wide range of brands in the spirits, beer, wine and soft drinks categories.
Even on the high seas and deep below the waves, the flag for manufacturing in Chester- field continues to be flown.
Cathelco, which has been based in the town for over 50 years, is another world leader – this time in designing and manufacturing equipment for ships.
Their products are used on cruise ships, oil rigs and ship- ping vessels across the planet as well as on naval vessels and submarines of 40 countries.
