P. 5
Here's the deal:
I was an average student, an okay soccer player and a hopeless anti-romantic. Then my dad gave
me a family heirloom: Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut. His favorite book. His father's favorite
book. His father's father's favorite book. His uncle twice removed's favorite book. His step-
sister’s aunt’s favorite book. But this isn't the time for My Cousin Vinny quotes, as tempting as it
is to let it run amok.
The book fired some synapses in my brain. It genuinely did. It’s not every day an oblivious
narcissist comes face to page with a brilliance he knows he can never match. Thing is, it was the
first time I really wanted to.
So ever since, I've been filling that scatter brain with anything in a stone’s throw. Probably why a
suspicious number of my books have dents in them.
