Choose Your Words
Good coaches naturally choose their words, speaking in a way that motivates the individual and builds the relationship with their team rather than blocking dialogue and motivation. Here are some examples to guide you in your coaching communication:
Motivational Blockers and Builders
BLOCKERS
BUILDERS
û “Great idea, but...”
ü “You have some very creative ideas, and I need you to help me understand the big picture.”
û “It won’t work / we don’t have time.”
ü “You’re on the right track and I’d suggest you continue investigating how it can be implemented within a shorter timeframe.”
û “It’s not in the budget.”
ü “I appreciate your feedback and will keep it in mind for the next fiscal year.”
û “You are very creative.”
ü “This new business idea would not have happened without your great “out-of-box” thinking — congratulations!”
û “Good work.”
ü “The report contained a very concise, useful conclusion — good work!”
û “You don’t care”
ü “In our last three project meetings, in which we’ve made significant decisions, I noticed you provided little input.”
û “You are always here when I need you.”
ü “I find your consistent support and willingness to help in a crisis goes a long way in making this department work.”
û “We’ve tried that before.”
ü “The timing may not be right for us to try implementing the new process.”
