Assessing Conflict
Although many people view conflict as something negative, the reality is that conflict is actually neutral (neither negative nor positive). It is how conflict is responded to that determines the nature of it. If dealt with effectively, conflict can be a very positive catalyst for discussion, dialogue, new ideas, problem solving, and even the development of relationships.

Spectrum of Conflict
Conflict is a process, not a ‘happening’. Some degree of conflict exists at any given time. Differences that are not handled respectfully may proceed to tension which, if left unattended, can become conflict. If not addressed, the conflict may escalate to a full on dispute which could cause a breakdown in trust and ultimately in the effective functioning of the relationship.
How leaders handle conflict has a major impact on employee motivation and performance. Mismanaged little issues can quickly become big problems and unnecessary dispute is often the result.
