Sources of Conflict
When existing conflicts manifest themselves in the workplace, their points of origin are seldom as obvious as the symptoms. It is easy to recognize an undesirable behaviour or attitude, but not as easy to identify where the conflict was born. Resolving conflict, in the truest sense, means identifying and focusing on the conflict source and not just the symptoms.
Locating the cause of a dispute can be difficult
• A dispute is rarely one-dimensional
• Sources of a dispute may be hidden
• Who defines the dispute is critical
There are generally four root causes of conflict:
1. ProfessionalDifferences
• Information, opinion, philosophy, competency, or method. 2. InterpersonalDifferences
• Expectations, understanding, work styles or values. 3. IndividualUniqueness
• Culture, individual experiences, background, attitudes, or personal beliefs.
4. OrganizationStructure
• Process, policies, roles, responsibilities, jurisdiction, standards, or goals.
