TIPS
Tips for Effective Brainstorming
ü Never criticize ideas — it’s a no-blame or safe environment.
ü Write every idea on a flip chart or blackboard. Having the words visible to everyone at the same time avoids misunderstanding and reminds everyone of the new ideas.
ü Ensure everyone understands and agrees on the question or issue being brainstormed. Write it down.
ü Record on the flip chart in the words of the speaker. Don’t interpret or use abbreviations.
ü Do it quickly. Don’t hesitate and discuss. The intention here is to write all ideas as quickly as possible; the process provides lots of time for explanation later. The pace you set is a contributing factor to the generation of ideas as people’s minds are stimulated with the adrenaline created by the team play.
Cause and Effect Diagrams
• Clearly illustrate the various causes affecting a process by sorting and relating potential causes.
• For every effect there are likely to be several major categories. Common ones are: Materials, Methods, People, Machinery (equipment), Environment, and Measurement. These may be adapted or revised for various industries.
• Categorization indicates which area requires further analysis. When examining each cause look for things that have changed or deviations from the norm or pattern.
