 Principles of Change
The Case for Change
The business environment today is characterized by
• globalization
• access parity (information, technology)
• emerging industrial economies
• rapid pace of change
The rate of technological change associated with the information explosion has created an environment intolerant of the status quo. No firm in the 21st century would boast about its constancy, sameness, or status quo standing compared to ten years ago. The uncertainty that traditionally accompanied major organizational change has been superseded by the uncertainty of staying the same. Such change in organizations is pervasive because of the degree and speed of change in the external environment.
Drivers of Change
Catalysts for change are the influences that precipitate change – forces that cause an organization to challenge itself and face up to the need to adapt. It is important to identify catalysts at the beginning of a change process and stress that, unless people see catalysts as real, all subsequent change will be unsuccessful.
Activity: Identify some key internal and external catalysts that are driving change at your company and state their impacts.
• Economy
• Technology
• Environment
• Legislation and policy
• Globalization and competition
• Employee attraction and retention
• Demographic and social setting
