Change Readiness
A company is change-ready when three conditions are present:
1. Leadersarerespectedandeffective.Leaderswholackthese qualities cannot get people to change.
2. Peoplefeelpersonallymotivatedtochange.Theyaresufficiently dissatisfied with the status quo that they are willing to make the effort and accept the risks involved with doing something new. Even in the absence of a crisis, a good leader can get people motivated to change.
3. Theorganizationisnonhierarchicalandpeopleareaccustomed to collaborative work. People at all levels are involved in decision- making.
Getting Change-Ready
One of the conditions for change readiness is a nonhierarchical organization and a workforce accustomed to collaborative work.
Develop Collaborative Approaches to Change – The How To
Ø Begin sharing information freely
Ø Make communication a two-way street – talk but also listen
Ø Expand aspects of decision-making to all levels
Ø Eliminate unnecessary symbols of hierarchy
Ø Encourage participatory management – engage front line employees
Ø Give people practice in collaborative work by attacking projects and problems through cross-functional teams
Ø Help people see the ‘why’ of change, and work with them to discover the ‘what’
Complacency is a barrier to change. When people are comfortable with the way things are, unaware or unconcerned about the need for change, change will be nearly impossible to implement. To develop change readiness in your team, first become aware of any signs of complacency. The worksheet “Signs of Complacency” is a tool to help you assess the complacency and change readiness of your team.
