Empowering Others
Empowerment is the authority to make decisions and the ability to act upon them. Empowering others is not simply a matter of assigning tasks or responsibilities and then walking away. To fully empower others when giving them responsibility, it is essential they have the:
1. Skills
2. Information&Knowledge 3. Resources
4. Motivation
As a leader, analyze the role / project requirements to ensure the team member has: 1. AppropriateSkills.
E.g. Ensure the team member has the necessary capabilities and the coaching and support for the growth opportunities specific to the role / project.
2. AccesstocompleteInformation&Knowledge..
E.g. Ensure the team member fully understands the scope, context and outcomes and
has access to all related information / contacts.
3. NecessaryResources.
E.g. Ensure the team member has the tools, equipment, time, budget, and support to
execute the project.
4. Motivationtoachievethedesiredgoalsandoutcomes
E.g. Ensure the team member commits to the role / project and accepts responsibility for
outcomes.
There are six levels of empowerment when giving responsibility to others. These levels can happen in all teams and each may be appropriate at different times / situations. The chart on the following page illustrates leader and employee responsibilities in the six levels.
