INFORMAL COACHING
• Spontaneous or “on-the-spot” coaching; May take place in the midst of doing work, when a teaching moment arises.
• Coach provides immediate feedback and support to a team member to help him/her achieve a specific short-term goal.
FORMAL COACHING
• Structured and conducted regularly such as standard gemba walks or monthly coaching meetings.
• Designed to develop or enhance a team member’s skills or knowledge over a specified time period.
Exercise: Reflect on your coaching experiences (when you coached an individual or when you were coached by another person) and provide an example where both formal and informal coaching was used to effectively support and motivate. Describe how the formal and informal coaching was integrated and its impact.

The Coaching Process is a continuous cycle that is built on the dynamic relationship between coach and team member. It is effective for engaging an employee and gaining commitment to learning and development for all types of performance opportunities e.g., performance does not meet expectations or performance exceeds expectations.
