Motivating People
Leaders are people who are responsible for achieving results through the efforts of other people, sometimes people they do not manage. The have responsibility but often little formal authority to accomplish their goals. Getting people to complete the tasks they assign or meet the schedules they set requires constant attention, encouragement and motivation.
Whether coaching others to implement an action, reach targets or develop their skills, a coach needs to understand motivational drivers.

Understanding individual needs and motivations are essential to being an effective coach, as “what drives an individual” is personal and is based on the value of the motivation to the individual.
A foundation tool to understanding motivation is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs (diagram on left) which theorizes that people are motivated by their unmet needs, and that basic needs must be met before higher needs can be satisfied.
