 Coaching for Continuous Improvement
Coaching is:
• An ongoing process, not a one-time event.
• Focused on improving team members’ skills and contributions.
• Covers a wide range of activities from formal to informal.
• Typically done one-on-one, but can also be effective with a team.
• Instruction, demonstration, observation, dialogue, practice and feedback.
Coaching in a Continuous Improvement Environment is achieved through the process known as gemba walks – a sensei observes the work area with a student, asking the student what he sees and asking more questions to stimulate the student to think differently, become aware of areas for improvement and develop skills. A sensei is like a personal trainer, one who sets expectations for you and then teaches, coaches, and prods you to be able to meet them. The sensei, or coach, shows the student how, gives him the opportunity to practice, observes the result and gives feedback, often critiques mixed with encouragement.
Coaching is an important aspect of the Front Line Leader’s role in developing team members’ abilities, managing performance, and building a culture of accountability, learning and continuous improvement. To have continuous improvement of processes requires a coaching culture.
Coaches help people clarify and reconnect to their purposes, values, and roles. A coach acts as a guide by challenging and supporting people in achieving their performance objectives.
Benefits of Coaching
• Increased awareness of strengths and development opportunities, resulting in continuous improvement of both individual and organizational competencies.
• Improved self esteem and confidence, eliciting more and better productivity from your team.
