Actions of a Leader Coach
An effective coach maintains a balance between providing the expertise and guidance needed, and keeping the responsibility with those who must think and do the work. They develop the judgement and decision making skills of their team members so they in turn become leaders.
Coaches:
• motivate and support others to stretch outside their comfort zone while leading by example
• believe that every individual has the potential to improve, develop, learn new skills, change, manage challenges, and achieve goals
• help their team members develop self awareness and self responsibility
• focus on growing and enhancing the individual, team, and organizational
capabilities through effective communication, motivation, and partnership
• continually demonstrate to their players that they have the will for them to succeed and the trust in their abilities to make it happen
• earn the trust of their team members by being trustworthy
• respect team members as individuals.
“Coaching is really about the 'heart' one gives to his or her team. We need coaches today who want to impart more than just the fundamentals of the game; who want to teach about character.”
Phil Jackson-Head coach of 9 NBA championship titles
