The future of

WebRTC — Uniied

Communications
D

espite its potential, WebRTC — the
built-in add-on for browsers that lets applications engage in real time
via voice, P2P ile sharing and video — comes
with a major drawback: It’s a pain in the ass for
companies to integrate with mobile.
I don’t say this to be crude or crass. It’s the
simple truth. Take it from me, the CEO of a
communications startup that moved from an
in-house audio stack to WebRTC last year.
WebRTC was (and still is) in heavy development,
so to have cutting-edge functionalities, we
had to use the development version, which
caused a steady stream of headaches, setbacks
and unknowns. Our server architecture was
handcrated and required an unconventional
integration of WebRTC, but even if it hadn’t
been, little documentation for how to use the
code existed, especially for mobile, where so
much B2C traic happens today.
