 Q&A with School Board Member
It has been a passion of mine from
Katye Campbell
What teacher inspired you the most growing up and why?
My 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Alderson, was one of my favorites. She was always kind to every student. I loved the independence that she gave us to work at our own pace, especially when it came to my favorite subject – math. I think she also saw the teacher in me because she would occasionally let me go down to the preschool classes and be a “teacher helper”..
Of the important initiatives you’ve been a part of, which do you feel has had the greatest impact?
This is a tough question! I am certainly proud of the work we’ve done with heart screenings for our student athletes and working toward getting our facilities, technology, and security needs met through the surtax. I also love the work we are doing to help every student grow academically.
But I think the greatest impact will be made by something we are still in the process of improving.
Wishing you and yours
the beginning to increase community involvement in our schools. Part of that is fingerprinted volunteers coming in to read with our students, mentor them, or share what path led them to the career they chose. Right before the COVID shut-down, we were able to get a mobile finger-printing unit which will really help with our schools in the north and south ends in recruiting volunteers. I look forward to the day we can welcome volunteers back into our buildings!
I’ve also been excited to see increased involvement
of businesses and churches and other groups in our Partners In Education (P.I.E.) program. They continue to amaze me with the amount and creativity of support for our students and staff. The more our community is engaged with our schools, the more they will see both the great work our schools are doing and the great needs that need to be met.
What is your favorite quote?
“A generous soul will prosper, and he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25
Tell us your favorite Heart of Brevard story.
In 2018-19, one of the schools that we were paying close attention to was Endeavour Elementary. Our district leaders knew that students needed extra one
on one attention to make the needed learning gains,
so it was “all hands on deck.” Even board members got involved, spending time as “influencers” one or two days a week with a handful of students. One day, a teacher was out so they had us take our students into the empty classroom to work. After a few minutes, I looked up
and realized that the room was completely full! There were literacy coaches from other schools, volunteers from Church at Viera (one of Endeavour’s PIEs), college students, parents- each coaching one or two students through challenging reading or math material. Everyone was there because they wanted to see these children succeed. The gift of time is precious, and it was overwhelming to see so many people using that precious gift to invest in our students.
