General Emergency Procedures
 Secure-the-Perimeter
Shelter-in-Place
For use to protect building occupants when there is a threat or hazard near or in the vicinity of the campus
Potential Antecedent: Police activity in area; Community emergency
When “Secure-the-Perimeter” announcement is made:
• Bring everyone within school-defined secure perimeter
• Perimeter of the buildings and grounds are secured
• Schools determine visitor entry or exit
• Increase situational awareness
• Changing classes may proceed
• Activities continue within secure perimeter
• Take attendance
• District & School Security will gather all available information and evaluate impact
• Listen for official announcement
 For use when building is seen as a place of safety and occupants must remain in a school building during an event in immediate vicinity of
the campus
Potential Antecedent: Police activity in immediate area; Severe weather,
Chemical contaminant
When “Shelter-in-Place” announcement is made:
• Bring everyone inside to classrooms or identified safe areas
• Perimeter of the buildings and grounds are secured
• Visitors in the building are asked to stay – not leave
• Post signage – no one allowed entry or exit
• Close and lock all exterior windows and doors
• No changing of classes
• Activities continue in classrooms
• Take attendance
• Wait for further instructions
 Lockdown
Evacuation
For use to protect building occupants from potential dangers in the building
NOTE: In active shooter situation, consider the 4’As’ of survival: AWARENESS, AVOID, ARM, ATTACK
Potential Antecedent: Weapon on campus
When “Lockdown” announcement is made:
• Clear everyone from the hallways to nearest available classroom
• Lock interior doors and windows
• Turn off lights
• Move away from sight
• Do not open the door
• BE QUIET!
• Take attendance
• Wait for an official to open the door
 For use when conditions are safer outside than inside
Potential Antecedent: Fire; Gas Leak; Bomb Threat
When “Evacuation” announcement is made or alarm is sounded:
• Bring class roster for student accounting
• Take the closest and safest way out as posted
• Be prepared to take alternate evacuation route, if necessary
• Go to designated Assembly Area as defined by school
• Take attendance
• Check for injuries
• BE QUIET!
• Wait for further instructions
