El Palace Hotel de Madrid nace con la voluntad de ser un edi cio singular dentro del conjunto urbano de la ciudad. Es una singularidad que vendrá marcada por diversos elementos, todos ellos de nidores de una condición excepcional. Su situación en el eje del paseo del Prado, la cali- dad arquitectónica del edi cio, su contribución a la imagen metropolitana de la capital, el carácter vanguardista en cuanto a la tipología hotelera, el avanzado sistema constructivo que le llevó a ser uno de los primeros edi cios madrileños hechos con la técnica del hormigón armado, la importan- cia que ha mantenido en la vida social de Madrid y su actual doble condición de edi cio de gran valor histórico —es el mayor de los grandes Pala- ces que se mantiene funcionando exclusivamente como hotel— y de hotel de gran lujo, cuyas insta- laciones y servicios están entre los más modernos de la ciudad, todo ello contribuye a una realidad incomparable que tiene en la arquitectura su ra- zón de ser y su expresión formal más so sticada.
En primer lugar, debemos destacar su ubicación dentro de la trama urbana. Hoy encontramos el Palace Hotel en el centro de la ciudad, cerca del Museo del Prado, frente a la fuente de Neptuno,
y a un paso de la Puerta del Sol. El edi cio se si- túa en un lugar estratégico para la de nición de
la transformación urbana de Madrid durante la segunda mitad del siglo xix. Hasta entonces, la ciudad había permanecido encerrada dentro de los límites marcados por la cerca de Felipe IV, le- vantada a principios del siglo xvii, con zonas muy densas en el centro y áreas poco ocupadas, como las vinculadas a ciertas posesiones reales como

From its conception, the Palace Hotel of Madrid was destined to be a unique structure among the city’s buildings. It was a uniqueness marked by di erent elements, all of which went into de n- ing its exceptional condition. Its location at the central axis of the Paseo del Prado, the archi- tectural quality of the building, its contribution to the metropolitan image of the capital, its avant-garde character in terms of hotel typology, the advanced construction technique that made it one of the rst buildings in Madrid to be built with reinforced concrete, its lasting importance in Madrid’s social life, and its present double condition of being a building of great historical value (it is the largest of the grand ‘palaces’ to continue functioning exclusively as a hotel) and a hotel of high luxury whose installations and services are among the most modern in the city, all together form an incomparable reality that nds in architecture its reason for being and its most sophisticated formal expression.
We must highlight, rst of all, its location with- in the urban setting. Nowadays, we nd the Palace Hotel located in the centre of the city, near the Museo del Prado, opposite the fountain of Neptune and a short walk from the Puerta
del Sol. The building is strategically located in regards to the de nition of the urban transfor- mation of Madrid that took place in the second half of the 19th century. Until then, the city had been enclosed within an area de ned by the walls of Philip IV, built in the early 17th century, with very dense central zones and other, sparse- ly populated areas, such as those linked to cer-
