For sailors, being able to create an “eye,” or a loop, at the end of
a rope was once considered a basic and important skill. Although
ropes with eyes can now be purchased, a reliable one can be made
with this technique. It only works with laid ropes, and if the rope
is hard-laid (see page 2) you will probably need a tool to work the
strands apart. Tucking the strands three times works well with fiber
ropes, but synthetic material, being slippery, requires five tucks
to be secure. Finish the splice with tape, whipping, or heat (with
synthetic material) to further secure it. This knot can also be useful
to campers who need a permanent loop at the end of a rope.
